The average salary in Japan reached 355,919 yen gross per month in 2025, according to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. This total monthly remuneration indicator is neither the guaranteed basic salary nor the amount actually paid after deductions. To assess a job offer, you also need to examine bonuses, working hours and where you live. Japan’s minimum wage depends on the prefecture, while purchasing power varies considerably according to housing costs and household composition.
In brief
The average monthly income is only useful when you know its scope. A survey of establishments, a study of job candidates and a tax statistic do not necessarily describe the same workers or the same remuneration components.
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare measures, among other things, monetary remuneration paid by employers. Exceptional payments may be included in this indicator, so it would be misleading to present the average systematically as a fixed monthly amount stated in a contract.
The recruitment website doda reports an average annual remuneration of 4.14 million yen in 2023 for the population studied. This result is a historical market benchmark, not an exhaustive measure of all Japanese employees or a current estimate for every occupation.
| Indicator | Published amount | Organisation and year | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average total monthly remuneration | 355,919 yen gross | Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 2025 | To be distinguished from basic salary and available net pay |
| Average annual remuneration of the panel studied | 4.14 million yen | doda, 2023 | Benchmark specific to a different population and period |
| Applicable legal minimum | Local hourly amount to be checked | Labour bureau of the prefecture concerned | Depends in particular on the workplace and effective date |
These indicators cannot be used to calculate a direct progression between periods: their populations and methods differ. To track salary trends, you need to use the same statistical series.
The average can be pulled upwards by the highest salaries. The median, meanwhile, divides the observed population between those earning more and those earning less.
An individual salary does not, by itself, define whether someone belongs to the middle class. A household with several incomes and a single parent responsible for all family expenses do not enjoy the same standard of living on the same individual salary.
The best comparison remains a comparable position, in a similar region and with similar experience.

Japan does not have a single hourly minimum wage that applies everywhere. Prefectures have regional rates, and some sectors may also have their own minimums. The national average describes the country as a whole; it does not replace the legal threshold applicable to an establishment.
When assessing an offer, identify the workplace and the sector concerned. Then check the amount and its effective date with the prefectural labour bureau or Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare: these figures change regularly.
Monthly remuneration cannot be compared directly with an hourly threshold. You need to take the contracted hours into account and determine which pay components are included in the legal calculation.
Overtime premiums, certain allowances and exceptional payments should not automatically be treated as part of the salary used for this check. A total advertised as attractive can therefore conceal a much less favourable fixed salary.
Part-time jobs, often referred to as arubaito, must also be examined from this perspective. The monthly amount then depends on the hourly rate, as well as the volume of work actually offered.
An hourly rate above the minimum does not guarantee a stable budget if schedules fluctuate. Ask how hours are organised, whether a volume of work is guaranteed and how additional periods are paid.
For French passport holders arriving from France, professional formalities are a separate issue. Our guide to working in Japan helps you prepare for this process; authorisation requirements must be checked with the Japanese immigration services. Rules differ by nationality and should be verified with the official authority.
With a similar monthly salary, a job with controlled hours may be more advantageous than one requiring extensive availability. Guaranteed income and the time needed to earn it must be assessed together.
The gross amount advertised is not the money available for your expenses. Social contributions and tax deductions may be taken, depending on the employee’s affiliation and personal circumstances. The employer also pays its own contributions, which are not additional income for the worker.
The distinction between gross and net salary therefore requires a personalised simulation. Applying one percentage to every offer gives a misleading impression of precision.
In its 2026 model, Wageberg estimates that a gross monthly salary of 310,000 yen corresponds to approximately 246,328 yen net for the single-person profile used. This is a simulation, not a universal amount or confirmation of the current average salary.
The actual result depends in particular on social security cover, tax deductions and income history. Ask the payroll department for an estimate detailing its assumptions, then check the rules in force with the relevant tax and social-security organisations.
Resident tax deserves particular attention because it is generally based on the previous year’s income. The budget observed at the beginning of a move may therefore differ from that of subsequent periods.
An annual package may combine basic salary, allowances and a conditional bonus. You need to distinguish guaranteed sums from those depending on results, seniority or a company decision.
Some contracts include a fixed overtime allowance. Ask what duration it covers and how additional hours are handled; the package’s overall title is not enough to assess its value.
Also examine whether transport costs and any housing support are covered. To organise payments and transfers, consult our guide to banks and finances in Japan, then check current fees with your bank.
Your everyday budget should be based on recurring net pay, without relying on an uncertain bonus.
Salary differences reflect several realities: qualifications, responsibilities, seniority, time worked and the characteristics of the employer. A national average combines professional situations that are too different to determine, on its own, what one person should ask for.
Employment status also matters. Progression prospects, access to bonuses and schedule stability may differ between a permanent position, a fixed-term contract, temporary work and part-time employment.
Professional Japanese can broaden access to positions involving customers, local teams or coordination responsibilities. However, it does not guarantee an automatic pay increase: its value depends on the company’s actual needs.
The same reasoning applies to French and English. A language becomes a negotiating point when it helps fulfil a specific role, rather than simply appearing on a CV.
In specialised occupations, compare the actual content of the role. Our guide to employment in Japan’s tech sector helps examine the specific issues in this market, where job titles may cover very different responsibilities.
Differences in pay between women and men must be analysed alongside working hours, career interruptions and access to responsibility. An average gap does not measure only a pay difference in identical positions.
To assess an employer, look at promotion criteria, salary scales and the possibilities for returning after family leave. These mechanisms influence career development beyond the amount offered at hiring.
Tokyo concentrates many head offices and specialised activities, but housing constraints can absorb part of the salary advantage. In Osaka or a regional city, opportunities and travel requirements are different.
An offer should be judged on its career trajectory as much as on its initial amount. Japan’s population and ageing trends also provide useful context when considering the country’s labour market.
Purchasing power in Japan depends on what your income can actually pay for. A nominal increase can be absorbed by rising prices. Real salary reflects the difference between pay growth and changes in the cost of goods and services.
Food, energy and housing do not occupy the same place in every budget. A household devoting a large share of its resources to essential expenses may feel rising prices more strongly than a household with comfortable savings.
Rent should be compared using equivalent floor area, location and features. The expression “standard flat in Tokyo” is not enough: proximity to a station, the age of the building and distance from the centre significantly alter the search conditions.
Moving costs and furnishing a home should be separated from recurring expenses. Our guide to the cost of living in Japan helps identify the items to examine, without replacing up-to-date estimates.
Mobility can also change the balance of a budget. A cheaper home requiring a car cannot be compared directly with accommodation served by public transport.
International salary comparisons require consistent indicators: gross or net, individual or household income, full-time work or all employment. Converting an amount into euros does not correct differences in prices or public benefits.
The exchange rate nevertheless remains important for anyone saving in euros or repaying expenses in France. Check the rate and fees with your bank when making the transfer, rather than keeping an old conversion.
Finally, compare the amount left after housing, transport, healthcare and family expenses. Our guide to the Japanese healthcare system helps identify affiliation and coverage questions to clarify before moving.
An attractive salary is one that sustainably funds your lifestyle while leaving room for savings.
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reports average total monthly remuneration of 355,919 yen gross in 2025. This indicator does not necessarily correspond to the contractual fixed salary or net pay.
Japan mainly applies hourly minimum wages set by prefecture, along with certain sector-specific minimums. Check the applicable amount and effective date with the prefectural labour bureau.
Not necessarily. Payment may depend on the contract, company rules and its results. Ask for a written distinction between guaranteed fixed pay, contractual bonuses and variable remuneration.
Have your recurring net pay estimated, then subtract housing, travel, healthcare and family expenses. Budget separately for moving costs and do not base your everyday spending on a conditional bonus.
